Wake Up Walmart

Wishing everyone a happy 4th of July!  As am American, I decided to take this opportunity to give you some thought provoking information about one of America’s biggest detriments, Walmart.  Is there any other company or person who has done so much damage or is capable of wreaking such havoc on my beloved country?  I doubt it.  On this day I am declaring my independence from Walmart!!

Before moving to Florida 9 years ago I barely knew what Walmart was.  Walmart was just starting to put their print on Long Island and the only store was about 6 miles away.  I was already a huge fan of Target so I never gave it much thought.  Now living outside of Tampa there is a Walmart seemingly on every corner, the nearest one being conveniently about 3 miles from my house in the 1st large shopping center I pass to go pretty much anywhere.

I have never understood people’s love of Walmart nor their cutesy nickname Wally World.  However, despite my knowledge of the companies terrible deeds I have still from time to time shopped there.  At this point my trips there are very rare and usually based on work hours where I leave work at 10 pm which is when local grocery stores close.  I’ve just stumbled across a webpage and blog that I think has finally gotten me over Walmart completely.  From a favorite blog of mine Fed up With Lunch (see links) I came to http://wakeupwalmart.com/ They also have a blog which sadly my Google Reader couldn’t find however, I was able to sign up for an email subscription http://blog.wakeupwalmart.com/

I have been aware that Walmart has had several sexual discrimination suits against them.  What I didn’t know, is that one started in 2001 representing 1 million women just this year was given the green light to proceed.  1 million women were held up in appeals for 9 years because Walmart will gladly pay lawyers to delay this forever if possible.  In 2001  woman represented about 2/3’s of their workforce while only holding 1/3 of their salaried position at notably lower wages than men.

Late last year a Walmart employee was fired after 5 years because he tested positive for marijuana.  The problem, he has a legal prescription and is using under a doctor’s supervision.  He is currently suing Walmart and I wish him the best.  It will be a difficult struggle against their corporate lawyers and unlimited funds.

Here’s a few more facts I found on http://wakeupwalmart.com/

Here’s any interesting article on anti gay discrimination http://www.advocate.com/News/News_Features/Rolling_Back_the_Discrimination/

100 million people shop at Walmart each week, about 1/3 of the US population

90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of Walmart, sadly there’s 4 within 15 miles of my home

While the Walton family is worth about $83 billion, they only donate about 2%.  On the other hand Warren Buffett worth $47 billion donates about 78%!

I could go on all day but I’d rather you go to their site and sign up on the fight against this company.  As a women, feminist, advocate for legal marijuana for medical use I can no longer support this store.  I hope you’re onboard with me and I’d love to hear what you think.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!  Also my deepest respect to those serving or who have served our country and to their amazing families.

  1. Reading your post, it made me glad I’m in Australia and have not had to deal with the Wally World experience. I had a mate from Wisconsin that about 15 years ago told me Wall Mart was like a virus, and it sounds like it just keeps getting worse and worse. Good luck with the good fight, and pray for us that they don’t arrive here next!

  2. I forgot to reply to you but I do agree with your friend. It is like a virus, it’s also kind of addictive. Some items are so inexpensive that it’s hard to resist. There are also a few items that are difficult to find elsewhere although I can’t imagine why. It’s also difficult to get through a day without hearing someone mention Walmart or comment on facebook that they are going there. My resolve is very strong this time, I can’t imagine myself shopping there again.

  3. With havin so much content do you ever run into any
issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it
is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization.
Do you know any techniques to help stop content from being stolen?
    I’d really appreciate it.
